“Piglet noticed that even though he had a Very Small Heart, it could hold a rather large amount of gratitude.” –A.A. Milne
Little Man is a bit obsessed with Winnie-the-Pooh right now, so when I found this quote I thought it would be the perfect way to begin my Motivation Mondays post.
A student asked me recently why I’m always so happy. I asked her what she meant.
“You never look mad,” she told me. “I never see you upset. You’re always smiling.”
I have to admit, it caught me a little by surprise. My first thought was, Well, I’m glad I’ve got the populace fooled.
Then, I thought about it for a second. And had my answer.
“There are a lot of bad things happening in the world,” I told her. “We hear it on the news all the time. And, for the most part, none of those things are happening to me, or people I love. So I figure my life is pretty good. I should be grateful, and happy.”
At the moment, it seemed like a good “teacher answer.” But even as I said it, I realized it was true.
My big worries right now are not big. I have an adorable, sweet son and a wonderful partner who’s my best friend. We are healthy. We live comfortably, in a lovely, safe neighborhood that we love. I have a great job that I love and am good at. Life is good.
And for that, I am grateful.
Do I have things I could complain about? Sure. My life isn’t perfect. I get stressed, annoyed, frustrated. But in light of what I realized in that short conversation, I know that I need to stay focused on the Big Picture.
Life is good, and I’m grateful.
